The Honeydrippers stand out as one of the most legendary yet brief supergroup projects in rock history. Formed by iconic Led Zeppelin lead vocalist Robert Plant. Following the tragic death of drummer John Bonham in 1980 and the subsequent dissolution of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant fell into a deep depression, even contemplating quitting the music industry entirely to become a teacher. Desperate to find his footing without the heavy moniker of Zeppelin, Plant decided to go back to his childhood roots.
In 1981, he secretly put together a low-key, local pickup band in Worcestershire, England, named after the legendary American blues pianist Roosevelt Sykes, whose nickname was "Honeydripper". Instead of filling massive stadiums, Plant and a changing lineup of regional musicians went on a guerrilla-style, unannounced tour playing small, intimate UK clubs and pubs. They played strictly 1950s and '60s American rhythm and blues, rockabilly, and pop covers completely out of sheer love for the vintage genre.
The project evolved significantly when legendary Atlantic Records executive Ahmet Ertegun saw the potential in Plant's retro obsession. Ertegun proposed transforming this casual cover band into a massive studio project. Backed by a substantial budget, Plant assembled a mind-blowing hodgepodge of rock royalty, recruiting guitar virtuosos Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers, and late-night keyboardist Paul Shaffer.
The resulting 1984 mini-album, The Honeydrippers: Volume One, was an unexpected commercial juggernaut. Driven by their chart-topping, crooning cover of Phil Phillips' 1959 ballad "Sea of Love" and the high-octane "Rockin' at Midnight," the EP proved that these hard rock icons could dominate the pop charts through nostalgia.
